There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just across the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect area, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 17:00, and though visas are supposedly required to pass, there are means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling den, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous luxuries accompanying the gambling den, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
